In this business it pays to be smooth, hard as nails and tough as they come. Unfortunately for me—I’m not. Luckily, I can wield sarcasm as well as any weapon, and I’m not afraid to use either of them. When that fails—and it usually does—there’s no substitute for a sucker-punch. So sit back and let me tell you how this nightmare came about and made me one of the most infamous agents to ever put on a badge.
But let me warn you right up front. I’m not suave enough to get a woman out of her clothes just by smiling at her. If that’s what you’re after, Ian’s Bond has got you covered. I’m not smooth enough to pull off most of these capers without having to fire a shot. There are guys out there good enough, like Spade and Marlowe, but that’s not me either. And I’m not one of those guys that’s so damn tough that even when he gets his ass kicked you just know—you know—he’s gonna be back to finish off the bastards that did it. If that’s what you're after, then nobody—but nobody—drops the hammer, like Hammer.
I’m the guy that has to get in there and get his hands dirty—filthy. The one that has to bust his ass and use everything he can to come out of it alive. It ain’t always pretty, but I get the job done. And don’t worry, I’m going to give you a little something in return, because I can promise you one thing—you’ll be laughing on the first page—in the first paragraph. If you’re not, then put it down and never pick it up again. Oh—and have a couple of aspirin handy, because my fights are so damn brutal that just reading about them is going to make your ribs hurt. You’ve been warned. Don’t come crying to me about it later. Now, where was I?
It was the year 2229, and the world was still recovering from the Planetary Civil War, which ended just a few years earlier. We’d made computers and androids so smart that it was time to ask ourselves the big questions—are they life forms? The answer was yes—but it didn’t come so easy—enter the war. But that’s another story. The war was over, and I was one guy that sure wasn’t going to miss it. The economy was booming around the galaxy and the future looked bright, at least for most of us. As a soldier returning to my hometown of Seattle, Washington, and with a shiny badge that said, Special Agent Thomas Morelli, I found myself running a small satellite office right in my own neighborhood with my lifelong friends, Eddie Shannon, and Champ, the most cantankerous, ornery android to ever roll off the assembly line. Our beat was on level one, hundreds of stories beneath the glittering lights of the skyscrapers that reach to the heavens.
On a day that started off like any other, I got my ass kicked by some local gangsters on my way to the office. But my day picked up as Eddie and I were hired by a neighborhood friend, Lisa Riker, to locate her father, Paul. He was a worker at one of the nearby dock warehouses, and he’d vanished a week earlier without a trace. An after-hours stroll by the warehouse landed us in a fire-fight as we tried to dig up Paul’s location. The only clue lead us to suspect the involvement of one of the most dangerous criminal organizations in history—The Black Hand. That’s right, the same gang that assassinated Archduke Ferdinand and started World War One. Now they were back, centuries later. But this time it was different--this was my town--and they just stuck their hand in the wrong cookie jar.
If you want to know more, you can either read my book, or come look me up in downtown Seattle. I know a great place where you can buy me a beer.–Thomas J. Morelli

A futuristic cop drama that hearkens back to 19th and 20th century mysteries. Despite being set in the future, you can almost picture the gents wearing fedoras and trench coats, bars being greasy dives. I love the dialogue which also seems reminiscent of what one would hear in 40's and 50's mysteries. Then throw in an android, flying cars, and guns that shoot all sorts of different types of bullets, including plasma and stun. There is nothing I did not like or felt was poorly done in this book.A fun, well thought out story, which continued to move. Action, excellent dialogue, a few twists, the main character having a love affair with the floor on a constant basis. Realistic situations. Great character interaction.
Well worth the price. Can't wait for the follow up (hint hint, Mr. C. Fella)

Rise of The Black Hand The Case Files of Thomas Morelli Book 1 eBook CJ Fella Reviews
Great book! Lots of action and characters you can't help but fall in love with. I am looking forward to this author's next book!
Amazing writer appreciate Clinton's style of writing.
Great format from this author. He combines the past glamour of the classic detective stories with a look into the future. A refreshing change from the same old thing. A pleasant look into the future with your feet grounded in the past. I can't wait for the next book in this series. "Here's looking at you"
This was a very nice treat. A great blend of sci-fi and PI. Enjoyed this very much. Surprised this was free. Highly recommended.
I enjoyed this book thoroughly and recommend it to any for whom reading is pure escapism. I truly hope that I'll meet Tommy again in a sequel or two. Or three...
This review is free of spoilers, so please read on.
For starters, some basics on plot. The book centers around, and is narrated by, the protagonist, Thomas Morelli, a young FBI agent in futuristic Seattle, Washington. in the process of looking into the disappearance of a family friend, he is pulled into a wider plot concerning the antagonist, The Black Hand. This was a nice touch, because it deals with some historical fiction. The Black Hand was a real organization that did some nasty things which led to the first world war. I loved the way it was woven into a more modern and very identifiable plot. I don't want to give away anything on the plot, so I'll stick with that and move on to some other elements.
I'm a big, big fan of the old school detective novels. Serve me up some Mike Hammer or Philip Marlowe any day! This book is a nod to all of those books, unapologetically so, in fact. Just read the back of the cover! But I'm also a science fiction fan, and this book manages to blend the two genres effortlessly. Just as a previous reviewer mentioned, this book really is a great combination of old and new. But the one thing that this book has that most of the others lack--is humor. Trust me, you WILL start laughing on the first page. The humor is sarcastic, witty, and fits seamlessly with the style of the book.
What I think of when I read this book was, at least visually, Blade Runner meets the Untouchables. Very nicely done. Other than that it is difficult to classify. It definitely doesn't fit entirely in the sci-fi camp, or the classic detective novel. It really does mix them. Neo-noir or neo-pulp would probably be the closest classification. It has a fantastically gritty feel to it. The action is ferocious. The fight scenes were something I enjoyed immensely. The science fiction elements aren't "in your face." He doesn't try to ram a lot of details about all these little gadgets down the readers throats, which is something that many sci-fi authors are guilty of. At the same time, we are introduced to some VERY real possibilities for our own future in terms of the dangers of technology. There were a couple of concepts brought forth in the book that, quite frankly, made me shiver.
The pacing of the book is fantastic. The author doesn't drone on and on about small details. Instead of taking a full page to describe what a person or a room looks like, he just gives you the basics. I, for one, appreciate this style because it lets my brain fill in the blanks and keeps the story moving forward.
What really surprised me was that my girlfriend was keeping pace with me most of the time, hammering out a chapter while I was busy elsewhere. She's not usually a sci-fi fan at all. In fact we generally don't enjoy the same types of books. The book is touchingly sentimental at times, and I think she really enjoyed that part, as did I. The book is fast paced, and this added element really balanced things out. I also enjoyed the way the author gave us insights into the protagonist, which can be difficult to do when writing in the first person. It was well done.
A very, very nice and unexpected surprise all around.
Tom Morelli is a fascinating character, an old school hero who believes in justice, even when pursuing it means he will be beaten to the curb and back time and again. His wry wit and self effacing humor make his commentary delightful to read. The action sequences are gripping and realistic. Like his noir predecessors, he is honorable, loyal and determined, and not without a weakness for a damsel in distress. I really enjoyed this novel and look forward to more. One last bit, Champ is a delight.
